Match Report – Wymondham –v- Cambridge, 18th December 2011
U13 ‘A’ Team – Wymondham 24, Cambridge 14
On a cold and frosty December morning, the Wymondham team faced Cambridge in their next encounter – a strong side that has a solid track record of success.
The game started robustly and it quickly became clear that this match was to be no walkover. Cambridge had some strong forwards and agile backs that put the Wymondham team under pressure from an early stage. Wymondham was strong in the line outs with Max Ross often ‘spoiling’ the Cambridge throw-in’, Daniel Bainbridge tackled hard and Jobe Skelton powered through their defence like a steamroller! However, in broad terms, the home team was not on top form today and often appeared slow to the rucks/tackles and the backs needed to run onto the ball at pace and give more momentum to their game.
The first try for Wymondham followed some excellent handling between Joe Milligan, Owen Sharpe, Dominic Smith and Daniel Wood. Cambridge struck back with another try but Wymondham responded with an excellent break by Lewis Jennings and another from Dominic Smith that saw five defenders falling by the wayside as he ploughed through them all! Cambridge scored another try and by half-time the game was finely balanced with Cambridge ahead by a margin of two points (14-12). The second half proved to be better than the first and, with some determined play from Wymondham; two further tries were scored to gain another win for the home team.
Whilst Wymondham won this fixture, it was not their best performance and both players and coaches know that they are capable of much more. Indeed, they will need to be on top form when they could face even tougher opposition in the New Year!
Four tries were scored by Wymondham of which two were converted.
Tries: Owen Sharpe (2), Joe Milligan (1) & Dominic Smith (1)
Conversions: Joe Milligan (2)
