TROJANS were greeted at Lowestoft & Yarmouth by strong winds and heavy rain but the rain soon stopped and the sun shone brightly on this match. With L&W one player short Braydan Harrison swapped his shirt to make up the numbers for L&W – thank you Braydan.
As a result of late withdrawals this TROJAN team had players forced to play out of position but they all acquitted themselves well in a very entertaining game.
From the kick off TROJANS exerted pressure on the L&Y defence to eventually win a turnover on the edge of the 22. With good handling both halfbacks came close to scoring before L&Y were eventually able to clear the ball from their lines but it was retrieved by the Wymondham backs who shipper it quickly across the field to Myles White for a simple run in for the first try of the day. Nick Ford converted.
Having taken the lead TROJANS relaxed a little and L&Y finally made it into their half of the pitch but stern defence kept them on the edge of the 22. Strong tackling from several players forced a mistake and the loose ball was picked up by Myles who sprinted around the disorganised defence, running a full 80m to score his second try under the posts giving Nick an easy conversion. As they had done before TROJANS relaxed after scoring and from the restart L&Y finally made it into the 22. They retained the ball several minutes and wining 3-4 penalties before crossing the line for an unconverted try.
In response TROJANS followed up their own kick-off and Lee Monk claimed the ball and stormed through some poor tackling to score. No relaxing this time and having received the kick-off they applied pressure down both wings with new boy Charlie Kilby coming closest to scoring with an individual break between the centres. Good handling and ball retention kept TROJANS inside L&P’s 22 for what was left of the first half.
L&P took full advantage of the strong wind in their favour at the start of the second half but solid defence kept them well away from the TROJAN line. They eventually ran out of options and knocked on. Making good use of the advantage ruling TROJAN forwards quickly recycled the ball and Luke Mathews ran through the gaps in defence to placed the ball down under the posts for another easy conversion for Nick Ford.
L&P now tried a change of tactics with several high kicks allowing the wind to push the ball into the TROJAN half but each time the ball was safely gathered and run back. The best try of the game started from a run out of defence, a break on the halfway line by Lee who moved the ball out of the tackle to Toby Craven who carried it to the edge of the 22. Then as he was tackled he moved it onto Liam who had an easy run in. Nick scored his forth conversion.
Again following a long kick the TROJAN backs ran out of defence and with everyone ready to celebrate Myles’ hat trick as he raced down the wing he was caught by a diving tap tackle and lost the ball forward as he hit the ground. TROJANS won the ball in the resulting scrum and Luke Mathews was on the end of the passing sequence just outside the 22 and sidestepped the defenders to score TROJANS 6th try. Nick unable to penetrate the increasing wind to convert.
TROJAN domination allowed them to easily close out the final minutes of the game. Final score 5 - 38
MVP - Myles White
