Match Report – Wymondham –v- Holt, 20th November 2011
Total aggregate score – Wymondham 91, Holt 14
Game One - U13 ‘A’ Team - Wymondham 35, Holt 7
With the fog hanging heavily at the High School ground and with key players missing from both sides, the Wymondham team faced its old adversary Holt in an eagerly anticipated fixture.
Maybe it was the porridge they had for breakfast but the first 20 minute game got off to a flying start with no sign of the traditional Wymondham ‘cobwebs’! From the outset, Wymondham dominated their opposition with efficient rucking, recycling and handling. Jobe Skelton, Harry Chadwick, Max Ross, Alex and Daniel Bainbridge all scrummaged, tackled and rucked relentlessly to create opportunities for the backs. These were quickly seized upon and developed by skilful and adept ball-handling from Will Findlay, Joe Milligan, Owen Sharpe, Dominic Smith and Lewis Jennings with try after try quickly following.
Five tries were scored in total all of which were converted.
Tries: Owen Sharpe (2), Lewis Jennings (2) & Max Ross (1)
Conversions: Will Findlay (4) & Joe Milligan (1)
Game Two - U13 Development Squad – Wymondham 21, Holt 7
The second game comprised a mixture of development squad and ‘A’ team players and could have been a challenge for the Wymondham team. Not so. Despite a concerted effort from Holt to dominate, the development squad players stepped up to the plate and delivered quality rugby in amongst the forwards as well as across the backs. Jordan Melton had a particularly good game powering through opposition lines with the determination of a lion. Good handling and excellent breaks from Dominic Smith and Joe Milligan followed efficient rucking and ball clearance by the forwards with tries following.
Again, a solid win for Wymondham with three tries scored all of which were converted.
Tries: Dominic Smith (2) & Joe Milligan (1)
Conversions: Will Findlay (3)
Game Three - U13 ‘A’ Team – Wymondham 35, Holt 0
The final 20 minute game reverted to the ‘A’ teams from both sides playing each other and it proved to be no different from the first. Excellent rucking and tackling was displayed by all the forwards who asserted themselves throughout the game.
Jobe Skelton drove through defence line like a bulldozer and Tom Goodrum tackled with true grit to create opportunities for their teammates. Charlie Blower had a particularly strong game, with impressive agility and dexterity in his pick up and offloading of the rugby ball – indeed, one offload seemed to be delivered intuitively without even looking! Players also showed thoughtful and skilful kicking, with Joe Milligan and Will Findlay both making good clearance and box kicks. Try after try were scored again with one example being so slick from receipt of the catch to the ball being placed on the try line, it seemed almost as good as watching a game at Wellford Road!
Another convincing win with five tries scored all of which were converted.
Tries: Owen Sharpe (3), Dominic Smith (1) & Joe Milligan (1)
Conversions: Will Findlay (3), Owen Sharpe (1) & Joe Milligan (1)
