Match Report – Wymondham -v- Diss, 6th November 2011
U13 Team – Wymondham 14, Diss 19
On a crisp autumnal day with the leaves falling all around, Wymondham faced Diss for its next home fixture. With six of its eight Eastern Counties players absent, this gave an opportunity for a number of development squad players to join members of the regular U13 team for a tough game of rugby at the Wymondham High School ground.
A lacklustre start from Wymondham gave Diss the chance to assert itself and they clearly wanted to win. An early try from Diss seemed to insert some determination back into some of the Wymondham players and they fought back. Scrummages were usually held but rucks were occasionally lost due to poor body-positions and a failure to effectively drive over the ball carrier and through defence lines. Tackling was generally strong but there remained a need for some confident, straight running by the centres to power through and gain yardage.
The half-time ‘discussion’ with the coach seemed to have the desired effect and the team re-started with a newfound vigour and determination. Lewis Jennings scored a solid try following a break and a burst of pace that left the opposition falling behind. A second try from Dominic Smith then followed with good ball-handling and offloads from Casey Hawes and Daniel Wood who helped set up the opportunity. However, Diss fought back strongly and with one Wymondham player sent off following a high tackle and another key player injured, they took advantage - turning over rucks and breaking through the Wymondham defence to secure two further tries.
This was a hard fought game in which Diss knew they had a ‘golden’ opportunity to beat a side that usually dominates. Ultimately, their determination prevailed and Diss won with three tries (two converted) against the two scored by Wymondham both of which were converted.
