Wymondham  women travelled to Southwold on a historical day for Wymondham Rugby club, the first time a womens team has played a league match.  Hopes were high following a comprehensive pre season however nerves were evident in the first few minutes of the game.  Possession ebbed and flowed with neither side getting the upper hand although territory was in Southwolds favour.  Eventually pressure told and the breakthrough came for Southwold.  5 -0.

Wymondhams tackling was resolute lead ably by Dyche and Taylor who repeatedly tackled Southwold behind the gain line.  Despite many line breaks Wymondham could not breach the Southwold line.  Infringements in the tackle area gave Southwold the ball and territory and strong running from an inside pass finally broke the Wasp defence and Southwold broke through to score despite every effort to hold the ball up.  10 – 0 to Southwold at half time.

The second half began with Wymondham making their way into the oppositions 22 through good recycling  and inter play between forwards and backs.  Sadly the endeavour was to no avail as Southwold won the ball and kicked deep forcing Wymondham to play deep within their own half once more.  This was the start of Southwolds best period of the second half and they were able to work through the phases and eventually score bringing the score to 15 nil.

Wymondham found new resolve and pressured in every area.  Lineout steals from De Vaux was the catalyst for Wymondhams attack and they kept the pressure on for the remaining ten minutes.  A charged down kick was eventually touched down over the Southwold line but the unsighted referee awarded a scrum to the home side.  All the pressure produced no score and the game ended 15 – 0 to the home side.  Wymondham must take heart from a good performance in their first ever league game and take the experience into their next game in a fortnight’s time at home.

Squad: Spruce, Seville, Bendall, Lockwood, Lewin, Pigg, Dyche, Devaux, Taylor (C), Gomez, Kaciubskyj, Perry, Crook, Sweetman, Nwandu, Eldridge.
