The third fixture on the rugby calendar involved a trip down to Essex for an eagerly anticipated game against Colchester, a side that has a reputation for being strong with a pool of some 65 players from which to choose. It did not disappoint. One of the hottest October days for over a century meant that both teams had to play rugby in temperatures approaching 28 degrees - this was when those gruelling summer fitness sessions really proved their worth!
Wymondham started the game robustly. They quickly cranked up the pressure at the scrums, rucks and breakdown, forcing errors from the opposition. The forwards really put in the work with our prop-forwards in the form of Jobe Skelton and Harry Chadwick scrummaging hard to enable Drew Anderson to hook the ball out to the backs. Tackling was equally strong from the remaining pack with Daniel Bainbridge making some excellent tackles against strong and large opposing players.
The Wymondham team knew its strengths and played fast-ball rugby. Quick movement of the ball by Will Findlay supported by an ever agile Joe Milligan enabled the now trademark ‘strike’ runs from the two big centres. One such run made by a powerful Owen Sharpe saw him break through the Colchester lines and, with a strong hand-off, he secured a well-deserved try. Strong support play from Charlie Blower as full-back also ensured that try-scoring opportunities were seized.
This game of rugby was a tense affair that was as much an endurance test of the heat as it was a test of technical expertise. Indeed, it was summed up nicely by one injured Henry Burton when he quietly said it was “going to be close”! Ultimately, the Wymondham U13 team put in the work throughout 50 minutes of hard rugby and secured five tries and one conversion to beat their opposition and gain their well-earned respect.
Tries: Charlie Blower (2), Daniel Wood (1), Dominic Smith (1) and Owen Sharpe (1)
Conversions: Joe Milligan (1)
Man of the Match: Joe Milligan
U13 Development Squad - Colchester 29, Wymondham 17
The third fixture of the season was against Colchester. With an under 13’s squad of around 65 Colchester kindly supplemented the Wymondham squad enabling two teams to be fielded and all available Wymondham players a game this week.
After a Wymondham kick-off the Colchester team showed their strength and size but they were denied a score in the first 10 minutes by some hard hitting tackles by the Wymondham squad. Despite huge efforts by Casey Hawes, Jordan Melton and Tom and Toby Goodrum running the ball and Nick Wileman, Robert Bull and Nathan Mitchell in the scrums they found themselves 17 points adrift after 17 minutes. The Wymondham team dug in and a very impressive 10m drive in was the turning point for the half with Casey Hawes again showing his handing off skills securing 2 tries and a conversion before half time.
