03 Prima Bowl QF

U10s win in the quarter finals of the Prima Tiger Cup Bowl – 21 January 2012

QF_Prima_BowlWymondham under 10s continue the run of Wymondham sides playing at Welford Road, Leicester.

Having remained unbeaten at the qualifying stages, the squad was naturally disappointed not to be playing in the main draw. Nevertheless, the chance of playing at Welford Road, more than made up for this and the boys travelled the now familiar route to Leicester full of anticipation and excitement.

Thanks to the hard work of their coaching team, led by Dave Clark, the boys knew they had every opportunity of winning their quarter final, giving them a chance of a return trip.

The draw for the quarter final was made by Tom Croft and posted to the Tigers website. Drawn against Southwell from Nottinghamshire, a team also unbeaten in the qualifying stages, Wymondham clearly had a tough challenge on their hands.

Their match was the first of the quarter finals to be played. Wymondham took the ball from the kick off and immediately made good ground. It was obvious by the body language of the Southwell coaches that they were surprised by Wymondhams’ power.

After several phases where the Wymondham forwards dominated the breakdown, the ball became loose close to the Southwell line and Wymondham crashed over from short range to score the crucial first try. The first try counts as a win in the event of a draw and we knew that Southwell would have to score twice to win the tie. For the remainder of the first half Wymondham were never threatened by the brave but increasingly desperate Southwell side.

At half time several substitutions were made all of whom strove to the common cause of keeping Southwell out. Although we did not score again our line was never seriously threatened.

At the final whistle everybody cheered and the chant of 'WYMONDHAM' rang out from the Caterpillar stand! The win meant the boys were able to enjoy their half time lap of honour in front of the 20,000 crowd at Leicester.

Bring on the semi final!

The boys return to Leicester on Saturday 25th February to play their semi final, and hopefully final, as a curtain raiser to the match against Newcastle Falcons.
