Two new pitches for Christmas
Our thanks to Wymondham Town Council for making the Browick Road playing fields available to us for the New Year whilst our search for a more permanent site continues.
The Sunday football team which has been playing at Browick Road has disbanded leaving the way clear for us to take over the facility.
We are now finalising a rental agreement which, when concluded, will enable us to train and play matches at Browick Road from January on an open-ended agreement.
The site includes space for two pitches and, within a fenced compound, a storage container, two small changing rooms, a referee’s room, showers and two toilets.
Sponsors’ Lunch - Wymondham RFC vs Holt
Saturday, 14 January 2012, 11.30 for 12.00
Sponsors – old, new and future - and members are invited to join us for our first Sponsors’ lunch at Tuttles Lane on Saturday 14 January 2012, when the 1st XV will play Holt in an exciting local derby.
Touch Rugby at Wymondham RFC
Touch is one of the fastest growing sports in England, played by people of all ages and skill levels. Introduced from the Southern Hemisphere in the 70’s, Touch is a fast, evasive, minimal contact sport.
Played on a pitch area of 50m x 70m, the game emphasises running, agility, passing, catching and communication. Touch is often referred to as Touch Rugby, but there is NO tackling, lineouts, scrumming or kicking involved. This makes it appealing to a wide range of ages and abilities, from juniors to masters and from slight to heavy builds.
It is one of the few team sports where men and women compete in teams together not only socially but at an international level. There are currently approximately 5,000 people playing Touch in organised leagues around the UK.
In a busy year, Wymondham RFC has seen player numbers for Touch Rugby regularly around 20+ and rising to over 60 during the summer break. We have also seen success at international level and an opportunity to play at Twickenham!
View from the Chair…
It only seems five minutes ago that Lesley was applying the thumbscrews to force me to produce some copy for the first edition of ‘The Red Lion Roars’ and now, here we are in December, and it’s happening again!
I know from chatting to many of you over the last couple of months that you appreciated the first edition of the newsletter and I would like (despite the aching thumbs!) to say thank you to Lesley for her hard work and skill in making it all happen.
Elsewhere, you will read of Martin Crook’s great success in identifying, with the help of the Town Council, some new playing space /changing areas that will, hopefully, be available for us to rent very early in the New Year. Although, not a permanent solution, this does at least give us a short-term fix.
Wymondham RFC Annual Dinner
Thursday 10 May 2012
Guest speaker: Matt Dawson MBE
An institution in the world of rugby, Matt Dawson was part of the England squad that took the country to victory in the 2003 World Cup. He is England’s most capped scrum half and won 77 caps for his country in total, including nine as captain. ‘Retirement’ has seen Matt become a BBC Question of Sport team captain, win Celebrity Master Chef and compete in Strictly Come Dancing!
It’s that big time of the year that everyone loves
………not Christmas, but the tax return deadline on 31 January 2012!!
Even though we are all able to complete and submit a return after each 5th April, human nature does lead to a lot of people leaving it until the last minute, which is dangerous, and in turn places pressure on you or your accountant.
HMRC recognised that something needed to change as too many people were not bothering to file their returns on time and therefore last year they changed the system so that anyone submitting a paper return must have it submitted by 31 October, with online submissions having until 31 January.
Club food glorious food …
Recently the U17s entertained Swaffham in a hastily arranged match at Tuttles Lane - which the U17s won of course!
Unfortunately, the message regarding the fixture had not filtered through to the kitchen, who were preparing to feed just the hungry mouths of the Colts and their visitors Rochford.
Disaster beckoned but Martin and the team in the kitchen managed in short order to feed not only the Colts sides but also the U17s - and had a little left aside to feed the always hungry coaching teams from all four sides.
On behalf of the Colts and U17s - thank you!
This is a warning to parents and coaches of boys who are playing at U16 and younger!
There is a transformation that begins during the 16th summer of these boys’ lives that returns them to the club a changed creature. This change then continues and, at present, I am unable to say what will happen at the end. I think girls may have something to do with it and beer but I can't be certain - research continues. I may have more news towards the end of the season!
On the rugby front...the Colts (U19s and U18s) have had a successful half season with a number of them turning out regularly for 1sts, 2nds and 3rds. Lessons learned in these games have served them well, as they look forward to entertaining Tring in the New Year in the 3rd Round of the National Plate Competition. Sadly they lost during the last play of the game against Rochford in the Cup Competition in a fantastic game of rugby

Coach Development Training
The club currently has in excess of 60 coaches throughout the age groups. In order that we help develop players to their full potential, it is important for the club to provide continuous training to all our coaches, and that the coaches themselves seek their own continuous development.
The RFU in 2012 will be introducing a coaches licensing system whereby coaches will be required to prove Continuous Professional Development (CPD) every 3 years. This will be achieved by attending coaching sessions / seminars / workshops and acquiring credits of approximately 6 hours CPD within the given timescale.
This season we have set up an ambitious programme of training and it is proving to be a great success, with coaches learning new skills / drills / systems which they can use with their players during the season - with technique, repetition and fun being the buzz words.
